MIKE
J. GREEN, Auctioneer/Realtor, is the current owner and
has been active as the main Auctioneer and Real Estate Broker
since 1977. Mike is the fourth generation of Auctioneers serving
the area since 1894.
Auctioneering
– A Family Tradition:
The tradition started with Col. FESTUS J. GREEN, who came to this
country from Somsetshire, England. According to the History of
Sac County, Iowa, “There are some professions which demand
a certain amount of native talent, and without this no man can
make a success of that particular profession. Some has said that
man can train himself for practically any line of business, but
there is one profession, which takes a number of qualities of
a peculiar nature in order to be a success in that particular
line. It is safe to say that the profession of the auctioneer
demands certain innate characteristics which are not possessed
by every man.” The article continues, “ a man must
be a good judge of human nature, a psychologist, in order to judge
what to do at the proper time. The auctioneer must first of all
have a good voice, which means that he must be a man of good physique;
secondly, he must have a thorough knowledge of the goods which
he attempts to sell; and thirdly, he must be a reader of human
nature in order to carry his conversation so as to keep his buyers
in a happy frame of mind; and lastly, he must be absolutely honest,
or he will soon lose the confidence of the citizens of his community.”
According to the history book, Col. Festus J. Green had all these
characteristics, which go to make up the successful auctioneer.
Green came to America in 1872 at age of 14 and he picked up the
brick and block trade. He also entered farming and then became
an auctioneer. He resided in Schaller, Iowa and then the Early,
Iowa area.
Like
his father, ROY J. GREEN decided to make auctioneering a career
and he began working as an auctioneer at age 16. Soon the logo
“Col. F.J. Green & Son” became a familiar part
of sale bills in the area. The father – son duo cried sales
in the Sac County and surrounding area, as well as throughout
the Midwest.
Upon
Roy J. Green’s death, Roy’s son, DAVE GREEN, started
to learn “the tricks of the trade” from the Colonel.
Dave became the third generation Green to cry sales in the west
central Iowa area. Dave began his auction and real estate career
at a young age and became very well known in the area including
the counties of Sac, Ida, Buena Vista, Calhoun, Pocahontas Counties
as well as conducting purebred livestock sales in other states.
Upon Dave’s sudden death, his surviving spouse, GRACE GREEN,
continued to own and operate the real estate business. In addition
to the real estate business, Grace has owned and operated the
Sac County Abstract Company, a real estate title company in Sac
County, Iowa.
With all the tradition behind him, it was almost predestined that
MIKE J. GREEN became the fourth generation of Auctioneers in the
area.
